Abstract: Photoisomerization is one of the most important photoreactions. In this paper the mechanisms of photosensitization of olefins based on the perpendicular intermediate theory and potential energy surfaces are described. The determination of the triplet state energy and the selection of sensitizers are also discussed.

Key words: photoisomerization, perpendicular intermediate, potential energy surface
