Abstract:

Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) show great prospects in clinical diagnosis, food quality control and environmental monitoring due to their intrinsic advantages such as low cost, portability, and easy operation and post-treatment without cross contamination. Nevertheless, present PADs often suffer from low detection sensitivity and are generally not applicable to analyses involving organic solvents or surfactant solutions due to the difficulties in fabricating lipophobic barriers. To address these issues, researchers fabricated high performance paper-based hydrophobic patterns and highly adhesive hydrophobic surfaces and demonstrated the fabricated PADs possess general applicability for assays involving organic solvents and surfactants. This review will introduce these reports on the study and applications of PADs with general applicability.
