Abstract:

A freeform collimating lens is designed based on a single lighting emitting diode (LED) to achieve collimated lightbeam. According to the principle of geometric optics, the method does not need solve the complex partial differential equations which is simple. The collimating lens consists of an inner freeform refractive surface, a part of spherical surface, a total internal reflection and a flat plane surface. The discrete points of freeform surface profile curve are calculated by Matlab and fitted the points to the three-dimensional entity model by Solidworks. In order to investigate the effect of LED light source size to collimating lens flare image, non-sequential ray trace is analyzed by Tracepro software. Computer simulation results show that an optical efficiency of 86.258% and a semi-view-angle of 3.3° is achieved for a 1 mm LED.
