Abstract:

In recent years, light-triggered self-healing polymer has played an important role due to the controllable and fast ability to self-repair. It has three methods to achieve self-healing for light-triggered self-healing polymer:self-healing based on a photo-crosslinking reaction, self-healing based on a photo-triggered metathesis reaction and self-healing based on the photo-thermal effect. In this reiview, we highlight the recent progress made in light-controlled self-healing. We analyse the materials design, underlying mechanisms and chemistries involved in the different methods developed for this types of emerging photo-responsive materials. We also demonstrate the relationship and similarity between the three metheds. Possible future developments and perspectives of using light as a unique trigger for polymer self-healing is also discussed.
