Abstract: Self-assembling growth of spherical colloidal particles is a promising technique to fabricate photonic crystals. Compared to other self-assembly methods, the vertical deposition method has received considerable attentions. We reviewed the recent developments of the improved vertical deposition methods. By using isothermal heating evaporation-induced self-assembly method, silica spheres with different diameters, which can be obtained with well-defined sizes and a very narrow size distribution in our laboratory, were self-assembled into superior quality colloidal crystals.
