Abstract: The solvato chromic effect of fluorescence probe for evaluating the polarity of inner cavity of montmorillonite modified by different cationic surfactants have been studied in this work.It is observed clearly that with increasing of the long chain carbon number of surfactant used the peak wavelength of fluorescence emission of probe N,N-dimethylamino chalcone shifts to short wavelength. It indicates that the polarity of the inner cavity of montmorillonite decreases with increasing of the length of hydrophobic chain contained in surfactant. These results obtained will be helpful to select proper surfactants to make the clay suitable to the specific intercalation materials including polymer or monomer with different polarities.
