Abstract: The photocatalytic oxidation of phenanthrene was investigated in aqueous TiO2 suspensions under UV light irradiation. The phenanthrene was preadsorbed on TiO2 and underwent a fast and complete mineralization. In the process, some intermediate products were detected by GC-MS,the pathway of phenanthrene degradation was described. In another system,a cationic surfactant hexadecytrimethylammonium bromide(HTAB) was used to increase the solubility of phenanthrene and to accelerate the photooxidation of phenanthrene, the effect of concentration of HTAB and pH was also studied.

Key words: phenanthrene, TiO2, photodegradation, hexadecytrimethylammonium bromide
