Abstract: Water soluble AM/AMPS copolymer composed of acrylamide(AM)and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propanesulfate(AMPS)was modified to obtain a reactive polymerizable product by photochemical process. The content of active peroxide group formed in the polymer chain varied obviously with UV irradiation time and a maximum appeared at irradiation time of 5-10 min.The high yield of peroxide formed was only obtained in the presence of benzophenone as photosensitizer at low temperature.Sequentially, the photochemically modified reactive AM/AMPS polymer is sufficient to initiate copolymerization with different vinyl monomers by photo chemical or thermal polymerization process, giving useful grafting/crosslinking copolymer products.
