Abstract: The photodegradation kinetics of cyanine dyes and merocyanine dyes in thin films has been studied by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. Those cyanine dyes holding a positive charge in thin films have relative good photostability comparing with merocyanines in thin films. The relationship between photostability and chemical structure of dyes has been elucidated by SCF-MO-PM3 calculations.
