Water-soluble conjugated polymers have promising applications in chemical, biological and medical fields, due to its excellent photoproperties like strong light harvesting ability and unique molecular wire effect. Upon irradiation, the exciton generated can migrate freely along the whole π-conjugated backbone and transfer energy to the acceptor at any backbone site, leading to high energy transfer efficiency. Therefore, the conjugated polymers are especially suitable to construct energy transfer system which can provide enhanced fluorescence signals, multi-color emission and improved efficiency on reactive oxygen species generation. In this review, we summary the principle and strategy of developing the energy transfer systems using water-soluble conjugated polymers, and their applications in biological sensing, imaging, photodynamic therapy and antibacterial. Finally, the future opportunities and challenges of WSCPs are discussed.
