The photoactive systems of thioxanthone derivatives were studied by N121 UV CURE TESTER at first. This is a new method for determining the photopolymerization rate of the photoactive systems by thioxanthone derivatives. The relationship between the wavelength of lamp and the wavelength absorption of photoinitiator was discussed.

A series of bichromophore compounds containing triazole group as an electron acceptor were designed and synthesized. The results of photospectroscopic study reveal that the emission properties of these compounds are depended on not only the electron transfer driving force, but also the linking group and the size of the electron donor group. The fluorescence emission of some of the molecules dramaticly change in the region of pH 1~3. The plot of the fluorescence quantum yield vs. pH displays a bistable system, which implies that these molecules possess photo switching property.

The radiative lifetimes and photodimerization quantum yields of trans-1,2-bis[2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)]ethene(POEOP) and its derivatives were measured in different solvents. Their fluorescence and nonradiative rate constants were calculated. The substituent effects and solvent properties on the photodimerization reaction were discussed. It is found that increasing the polarity of solvent is advantageous to the photodimerization reaction but it is disadvantageous in heavy atom solvent, which means that the dimerization occurs by a singlet mechanism.

The effect of seven different gelatins on diffraction efficiency of dichromated gelatin holograms was studied. It was found that one gelatin differs greatly from another in diffraction efficiency of dichromated gelatin holograms. Highest diffraction efficiencies of dichromated gelatin holograms of active gelatins are over 80 percent and that of PA modified gelatin is between 60 and 80 percent and those of inert gelatins are below 50 percent. Dichromated gelatin holograms of active and inert gelatins are clear, but that of PA modified gelatin has “white fog”.

This paper presents the results of Cr(Ⅵ) adsorption and photocatalytic reduction in CdS dispersion. CdS exhibits quite high adsorption and photocatalytic reduction activities. Treatment of CdS in the air under 300℃ or less resulted in the promotion of activities for Cr(Ⅵ) adsorption and photocatalytic reduction. The adsorption of Cr(Ⅵ) on the untreated CdS catalyst surface was near monolayer, while the adsorption on the treated CdS catalyst surface was multilayer. Comparative study of adsorption and photocatalytic reaction indicated that adsorption step is rate-control step of whole reaction. During Cr(Ⅵ) reduction, photocorrosion was observed.

Two donor accepter systems linked by polyethylene glycol were synthesized. It was found that on selective excitation of l-naphthoic acid moiety very efficient intramolecular singlet singlet-energy transfer from l-naphthoic acid to 9-aminoacridin occured. The effect of solvent polarity on energy transfer efficiency has been discussed.

The optical properties of CaS(Eu, Sm) electron trapping materials are investigated. Optical image of real object was detected and stored using 200 μm thick CaS(Eu, Sm) PMMA film. This kind of recording medium shows many attractive advantages such as no wet developing process, erasable and reusable, and large dynamic range. The experiments show that electron-trapping materials, as practical optical recording media, have good prospects.

Six different kinds of near infrared absorbing cyanine dye with typical structure in spin coated film have been chosen for studying their spectroscopic properties and the relationship berween structure and stability. Results show that cyanine dye film has much wider absorbing range than the same dye in solution. It has also been found that indolenine series dye exhibit markedly higher stability than other kinds of cyanine dye, and the structure of cyanine dye can greatly affected its photostability. We have succeeded in stabilizing cyanine dye film with two different singlet-oxygen quenchers to an acceptable level. At the same time, it has been indicated that the content of quencher is also an important factor that affects the photostability of dye.

The photophysical properties of 2-phenyl-4-(4’-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)-6-(4’-chlorophenyl)pyrylium tetrafluoborate were studied in 1,2-dichloroethane and PMMA film respectively. It is shown that both intramolecular charge transfer and energy transfer occur in excited state in 1,2-dichloroethane and PMMA film. The difference between them is that in 1,2-dichloroethane the fluorescence emission corresponding to X-axis is detected only and the fluorescence emission from Y-axis is completely quenched due to the formation of TICT (twisted intramolecular charge transfer). Whereas, the fluorescence emissions corresponding to both X-axis and Y-axis are observed in PMMA film. This indicates that the TICT formation could not be formed in excited state under the conformation constrained condition.

The responses of the bR-LB film to flicking light of various intensity were determinde. It was showed that the bR-LB film exhibited the critical fusion frenquency similar to the visual system of the animal. Further studies were involved in the switch responses of the bR LB film to flicking stimuli and comparation with the Ferry-Porter law and the Talbot-Plateau law which are indicated by the visual system.

2-carboxy-, 2-nitro-, 2, 4-dinitro diphenylamine-4-diazonium salts and the corresponding diazoresins were prepared from polycondensation of diazonuium salt with formaldehyde or 4, 4-bis(methoxymethylene)diphenyl ether. The photolytic and thermolytic properties of the diazonium salts and diazoresins were also investigated. The results show that the substitution groups attached on molecule of diazonium salt have only minor influence on photolysis but have remarkable effect on thermolysis of the diazonium salts as well as diazoresins.
