Abstract: The fluoiescence spectra of two triphenodioxazines in 18 solvents were studied. The fluorescence quantum yields of the compounds were calculated. It was found thatthe νmaxF of the fluorescence spectra of the compounds varied linearly with the (n2-1)/(2n2+1) and ET(30) of the solvents. The Stokes’ shifts vs of the fluorescence spectra of the compounds varied linearly with the ET(30) of the solvents. The hydrogen bonding interaction between the alcohol solvents and the solutes and the "external heavy atom effects" of the halogenated solvents decreased the fluorescence quantum yields of the compounds.
