Abstract: The photochromism of Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehyde and its derivatives have been an active field for three-quarters of the century[1,2];many papers have been published on this phenomenon especially in the last decade. Although there is a general agreement that the coloration process involves an intramolecular proton transfer from hydroxyl group to the imine nitrogen atom followed by framework changes of the molecule[3,6],the structure and configuration of the coloured species are still the subject of intensive discussion[7,8]. In order to obtain more information on Schiff bases,we studied a series of these compounds. In this paper,we report the transient absorption spectra and the de gay kinetics of N-salicylidene-p-methylaniline.
