Abstract: A series of ferrocenyl imidazole derivatives were obtained via Radziszewski synthesis, which exhibit an intriguing spectroscopic and electrochemical response upon protonation. In neutral or basic solution, the compounds exhibit low redox potentials representing an OFF state;while in acidic solution, the protonized compounds exhibit high redox potentials representing an ON state;these processes are reversible and can be controlled via the adjustment of acid/base.All these features made these ferrocenyl molecules the promising electrochemical switches.

Key words: ferrocenyl imidazole derivatives, electrochemical switch, acid/base control
