Abstract: The unique optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots(QDs) make them very promising as fluorescent probes in biomedical application. We review current approaches to the synthesis, surface modification and bioconjugation of QDs,as well as their advantages over traditional organic dyes in biological imaging.

Key words: semiconductor quantum dots, fluorescent probes, biological imaging
