Abstract: The granularity of both the dye image and its associated silver image of Monochrome-Chromogenic Film XP1 400 has been determined when processed in the recommended chro-mogenic developer. The granularity of the image processed in conventional black and white-developer was also measured for the comparison with the chromogenically developed image. The measurements show that three types of granularity have different variation with respect to-the developed density. The number of developed grain per unit area of both the associated image and the black and white image has been calculated by Selwyn Equation. The calculations indicated that the associated image has lower granularity and more number of developed grain per unit area than the black and white image does. The photomicrographs verify the results. The explanation has been given using the function of DIR coupler existed in the coating layer. The model of the development of the silver halide grain with or without DIR coupler in the layer has been suggested in order to describe the contribution of DIR coupler in the process of developing.
