Abstract: The fluorescence spectra of N, N’-bis-β-naphthylmethyl-piperazine (DMNP) in benzene solution mixed with acetonitrile have been determined. When the acetonitrile concentration is less than 5mol·dm-3, the Stern-Volmer plot is linear. This can be explained by specific interaction between acetonitrile and the DMNP exciplex. With the increasing of acetonitrile concentration the quenching and red shift in emission maxima of DMNP intramolecular exciplex accompanied by the appearance of intramolecular excimer formation can be found to be related to the polarity of the system. The mechanism for the formation of excited state complex of DMNP has been proposed.
