Abstract: The copolymerization of 2-vinylnaphthalene with fumaronitrile takes place under the irradiation of 365 nm to produce 1:1 alternating copolymer. The initiation mechanism was studied. The excited complex is formed from the excitation of the charge-transfer complex of the comonomers and the local excitation of 2-vinylnaphthalene and then collapses to 1,4-bira dical which will initiate the polymerization.
