Abstract: The present author has ever predicted the future of silver halide photographic materials by evaluating the distance between the present state and theoretical limit of the efficiency of image formation and analyzing the causes for it. This paper describes the result of the application of the above stated method to color films and digital still cameras at the present. It was predicted that the room for the improvement of the efficiency of image formation of the former would be much larger than that of the latter in the future, and that the former will continue to lead photography.

Key words: efficiency of image formation, silver halide emulsion, color film, CCD, digital still camera
