Abstract: Iodine-containing SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by using 3-iodopropyl-trimethoxysilane as precursor,in which a BODIPY fluorescence dye was encapsulated. The presence of iodine atoms renders the BODIPY dye higher intersystem crossing efficiency by way of heavy-atom effect, thus higher singlet oxygen efficiency and stronger DNA photocleavage capability, fully demonstrating the promising potential of iodine-containing SiO2 nanoparticles as the effective nanocarrier for the photodynamic application of highly fluorescent dye molecules.

Key words: photodynamic therapy, heavy-atom effect, nanoparticle, BODIPY dye
