Abstract: In this work a new compound(E)-4’-(4-(2-(2-naphthalenyl)vinyl)phenyl)-2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine L was synthesized, characterized and used to recognize iron ions.Upon addition of Fe(II) or Fe(III),the solution(V(CHCl3):V(ethanol)=1:20) of L can show magenta or orange-red color in visible region, respectively. And in the UV-vis spectrum of L in solution there emerge two characteristic peaks at 374 and 574 nm.Furthermore, the response of L to iron ions is highly sensitive and selective even though in the presence of other metal ions. The limit of detection(LOD) and linear concentration range for iron(II)/iron(III) and iron(II+III) were studied, too.
