Abstract: Color shifting and returning of diazo dyes used in silver dye bleach (SDB) photography were studied, focusing on the relationship between the properties and their molecular structure. The results showed that the dyes with coupling moieties of N-benzoyl J-acid, G-acid or chro-motropic acid could shift and return easily by benzoylation and debenzoylation, but those with coupling moieties of R-acid or N-acyl H-acid were difficult. Using the shifted dyes M-16 and C-20 in SDB photography, the sensitivity increased 3.8 and 6.3 times, respectively.
