Abstract: Although the study on the over-all photosplitting of water into H2 and O2 can be traced backed to ca.40 years ago,a real breakthrough has not been achieved in this field so far.Currently available published studies of H2 evolution based on sacrificial systems by visible light at home and abroad may be meaningful in helping understand the reduction mechanism of hydrogen ion,but they are inapplicable to solving the problems emerging in over-all photosplitting of water. Thus the domestic academic circles involved in photocatalysis are reminded not to acknowledge that the achievements made in the researches of H2 evolution via sacrificial systems as the progresses in the field of over-all photosplitting of water. It is suggested to summarize the unsuccessful practices in the past by taking into account both thermodynamic and kinetic requirements so as to establish a correct strategy for the study of the catalysts applicable to the over-all photosplitting of water.
