Abstract: Kinetic behaviors of the homopolymerization of(N,N-Dimethyl-N-methacryloyl oxyethyl-N-benzyl)ammonium chloride(DMBAC) and the copolymerization between DMBAC and AM were studied.Polymerizations were carried out above the critical micelle concentration(CMC) of DMBAC,and the initiation process was carried out photochemically using 2,2’-Azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride(AIBA)as a photoinitiator. The results indicate that the rate of the homopolymerization is proportional to the concentration of photoinitiator and monomer with exponents of 0.29 and 0.89,respectively,the apparent activation energy is about 13.74 kJ/mo1.The rate of copolymerization is proportional to the concentration of photoinitiator and monomers with exponents of 0.82 and 0.83,respectively,the apparent activation energy is about 10.97 kJ/mo1.The reactivity ratios of r1 0.27 for AM and r2 2.00 for DMBAC were also obtained, which suggests that AM prefers to form copolymers whereas DMBAC produces homopolymers.
