The reducing properties of photographic gelatins have been determined and compared by potential titration. The magnitude of the reducing property of different kinds of gelatins can be arranged in the following sequence: active > semi-active> inert >deionized. The inert gelatins of the same kind have been shown to be different in their reducing property. This difference can be attributed to the different kind and amount of reducing agents contained in gelatin, depending on the processing technology of gelatin manufacture and post-treatment. The results of reducing property in present paper can be used to explain, in part, the difference of various gelatins in their photographic property.

This paper describes a special double coated X-ray film designed with a rcflecting-isola-tion layer between the emulsion layer and the base for both sides. Using this structure, the effect of crossover exposure can be eliminated. The sensitivity of such special structure film is about 25% higher than that of the ordinary film (with same emulsion) and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of such film, with intensify seren, was measured with X-ray is much higher (25%-50%, depending on the spacial frequency from 0.1 to 31 p/mm) than that of the ordinary film.

With Ru ion treatment 5 increased nearly up to unity. In the case of Au, Pt and Pb, S increased by a factor of 2 to 2.5. The presence of metallic layers deposited on the surface of polycrystalline

The four-component system composed of zinc tetraphenylporphyrin as photosensitizer, various viologen derivatives as electron mediator, ethylene diaminetetracetic acid disodium salt as electron donor and platinum as catalyst has been investigated. It was found that hydrogen evolution depended on the viologens used, the longer the aliphatic group (Gn V
2+
) in viologens, the less the hydrogen evolution. The amount of hydrogen evolution was too small to detect until viologens n>8. The hightest hydrogen evolution was obtained while CTAB and methyl viologen (C1 V
2+
) were used.

In this paper, small silver clusters on (110) surface of AgBr- cyrstal are considered as latent image. The Ag clusters mentioned above were studied by using semi-empirical SCF molecular orbital method CNDO/2. From the results of calculation, the conclusions can be drawn as follows.(1) The optimized geometries of Ag
3
and Ag
4
were found to be isosceles triangle and trapezoid with their planes perpendicular to the (110) plane of AgBr crystal.(2) Ag
3
and Ag
4
clusters are polar. The polarity seems to be responsible for the catalytic effect in the development and accumulation of Ag atoms. Hence it may be an important property of the latent image.(3) Energetically, Ag
3
is the most stable one among the Agn clusters (
n
= 1-4). At the same time, Ag
3
is also the cluster to become polar, therefore Ag
3
may be the minimum size of the latent image.(4) The growth of the Ag cluster probably first occurs by an ionic event, followed by the trap of electron.

The photochemical reaction of free radical lightsensitive system CBr
4
-DPA (Diphenylami-ne) is reported. The rate of the photolysis of CBr
4
is decreased with the increasing wavelength in 250-400 nm. When CBr
4
-DPA system is radiated upon 254, 284 and 333 nm, which correspond to the maximum absorption wavelengths of CBr
4
, DPA, and CBr
4
-DPA charge transfer complex, respectively, the maximum rate of photochemical reaction is generated at 333 nm. This shows that the main lightsensitive componant, in the exciting stage, is ground state charge transfer complex consisting of CBr
4
and DPA instead of CBr
4
or DPA.

This paper described the syntheses of 8 dicarbocyanine dyes containing α β,δ-propenyle-ne bridged chain. A test of their photographic properties has been made. It is proved that the pentamethine dyes with α β,δ-propenylene bridged chain may be used as effective red sensi-tizers. The emulsion sensitized with these dyes have good storage stability in the presence of cyan colour coupler C-1.

Turbidimetry was used at 21℃ to measure the growth rate of AgBr crystals which were dispersed in the aqueous solution of sodium dodecyls sulphate (SDS), 3,4-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazo-le-5-thione (DMT) or cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) at pBr
4
or pAg
4
. The results indicated that the increase of the average crystal volume was not due to the coagulation of particles but involved in a process of recrystallization, i.e. Ostwald ripening. The addition of SDS (10
-5
mol·dm
-3
) causes the acceleration of AgBr recrystallization in pAg
4
and the retardation of AgBr growth in pBr
4
, whereas the addition of DMT has a great restraining effect on the AgBr growth and the addition of CTAB accelerates AgBr growth by adsorbed C
+
. The possible explanation of the above-mentioned phenomena in AgBr recrystallization was also discussed.
