Abstract: The absorption spectra of 2-hydroxy-4-octoxybenzophenone (HODB) and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (HMDB) both in good solvents (cyclohexane, tetrahydrofuran and methanol) and in poor solvents (ethylene glycol-water mixed solvents) were studied. In poor solvents, aggregation of HODB occurs. The absorption spectrum of HODB in aggregates is similar to that in cyclohexane, indicating that the polarity inside the aggregate is very low. This phenomenon was not observed for HMDB.
