Abstract: The radiative lifetimes and photodimerization quantum yields of trans-1,2-bis[2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)]ethene(POEOP) and its derivatives were measured in different solvents. Their fluorescence and nonradiative rate constants were calculated. The substituent effects and solvent properties on the photodimerization reaction were discussed. It is found that increasing the polarity of solvent is advantageous to the photodimerization reaction but it is disadvantageous in heavy atom solvent, which means that the dimerization occurs by a singlet mechanism.
