Abstract: A general method for synthesizing active ethers(with complete etherification) synthesized from vinyl alkyl ether and low molecular weight phenol is investigated and the optimum synthesis conditions are proposed in this paper.Established a series of parameters between phenol and imaging, e.g.,hydroxy equivalent(Noh)>critical alkaline aqueous insoluble hydroxy equivalent, critical alkaline aqueous soluble hydroxy equivalent and MP/A value interpreted as ratio of dissolution inhibition to dissolution acceleration.Established alkaline solubilities of phenol(ASTW) based on various imaging requirements:highly alkaline soluble, alkaline soluble, slightly alkaline soluble and alkaline insoluble.Measured or calculated parameters of active ether,i.e.average ether equivalent, calibrated average ether equivalent related to molecular weight,ME/AE value and DL(ration of ME/AE to MP/A).Proposed several empirical formulae and molecular design rules of active ether for photo /thermal imaging based on the above parameters as well as author’s experiences in photo/thermal imaging.
