Abstract: ZnO ultrafine particles were prepared in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)and the photoreactions occurred on the surface of such particles under UV irradiation were studied through UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. In the presence of oxygen,it was found that new ZnO collloids were generated under UV irradiation when excess Zn2+ ions were adsorbed on ZnO surface whereas only dissolution of ZnO was observed when OH- was in excess,The results of fluorescence quenching experiments suggest that Zn2+ on the surface of ZnO acts as the visible fluorescence center of ZnO particles.
